In 1914 the population of Derby was large enough that they Derby could send 143 men into World War 1.[8]

Derby became a mass mining town after 1876 when the Krushka brothers discovered tin there. there were many famous mines from then until 1945 around the town. a mining shanty town has been created in the old school grounds at Derby, complete with general store, blacksmiths shed, mine office, butchers' shop, a printing office, three hotels[1], two butchers[2], two bakery's[3], the goal, huts and cottages.
